For three years, from 1998 to 2000, my husband, Hal Cannon, and I had the great pleasure of producing a series of features for Public Radio International’s popular travel show, The Savvy Traveler. We crisscrossed the American West, searching out little-known places and even lesser-known people.
Hal handled the production end of our partnership, and often he would need to pull off the road in the middle of the day to find a high spot with good cell phone reception for a conference call. I took advantage of these respites to hunker down on the side of the road and sketch.
